Is My Coming Round a Problem?
Written by: Chantal Vitalis
He was young on that day when father gave daughter away.
The way she moved, the way she looked, he thought he was ready to pay.
But the years they added up, the wife and the kids and the car.
At 42, he’s drinking with some girl he just met at the bar.
It wasn’t even all that hard, soon she’s a regular thing;
whenever he could find the time he’d ask if she could fit him in.
“Is my coming round a problem for you?”
She calls up, tears in eyes, he calls it a speck of dust.
“And if it grows, it’ll be bigger than the both of us.”
She says, “I don’t know what to do, I know that we need to talk.”
He says, “There’s nothing that ‘we’ can do, let me outline it for you in chalk.”
But she’s already made up her mind, he’s trying to get her off the phone.
She’s trying to keep him on the line, she says,
“Are your wife and kids home? Is my coming round a problem for you?”
The years they pass, now 19, there’s a young man with sleepless dreams.
His mom and dad see their boy being carried away by a stream.
They don’t know what he wants, they say, “Are we not your family?”
He says, “It’s not like that, I just need to look at someone who looks like me.”
And it doesn’t take him all that long, he’s got a number in his hand; as she’s
walking to the phone he’s got his first question well planned…
